Description

The Sony FR7 does something no PTZ camera has done before — it combines a full-frame Cinema Line sensor with an interchangeable E-mount lens system, giving you the image quality of the Sony FX6 in a fully remote-controlled head. That means shallow depth of field, genuine low-light performance, and cinematic colour science from a camera that doesn't need anyone behind it.

We hired the FR7 for productions where getting an operator on set simply isn't an option — tight spaces, restricted access areas, reality formats, live events where cameras need to disappear into the environment. The built-in web app means the camera can be controlled from anywhere on the network, and with the optional RM-IP500 controller you get full joystick-controlled pan, tilt and zoom with up to 100 programmable position presets. For multi-camera setups, a single controller can manage up to 100 FR7s simultaneously.

What makes it stand apart from every other PTZ on the market is the lens system. Traditional PTZ cameras are locked to built-in optics — the FR7 accepts any E-mount glass, which means you can dial in the look you want rather than accepting whatever the camera gives you. We offer it with the Sony 28-135mm G power zoom as an optional extra, which pairs perfectly with the PTZ head for smooth remote zoom control. The internal variable ND, dual base ISO, and 4K 120fps slow motion round out a spec sheet that would be impressive on any cinema camera — let alone one that operates without a soul in the room. FAQs

What productions is the FR7 best suited for? The FR7 is ideal for any situation where a camera operator can't physically be with the camera — tight or restricted spaces, reality and unscripted formats, live events where cameras need to blend into the set, corporate and conference filming, and multi-camera studio setups where you need to cover angles without staffing every position. The Cinema Line image quality also makes it suitable for higher-end narrative work where a locked-off or remotely controlled angle is needed.

How is the camera controlled? The FR7 has a built-in web application that allows full pan, tilt, zoom, focus, recording and settings control from any tablet or browser on the same network. It's also compatible with the optional Sony RM-IP500 controller, which provides dedicated joystick control and is particularly useful for live productions where real-time precision matters. A basic IR remote is also included for on-site use.

What's the image quality like compared to other PTZ cameras? Significantly better. Most PTZ cameras use small sensors with integrated optics, which limits dynamic range and low-light performance. The FR7 uses the same full-frame Exmor R sensor found in Sony's Cinema Line, with 15+ stops of dynamic range, dual base ISO and S-Cinetone colour science. It's a genuinely different class of image — and because it shares the same picture profiles as cameras like the FX6 and FX9, footage matches easily in a multi-camera workflow.

Why would I use the 28-135mm G lens rather than another lens? The Sony 28-135mm G is a power zoom lens, meaning the zoom can be controlled remotely through the FR7's servo system — crucial when no one is physically on the camera. Most E-mount lenses require manual zoom, which isn't practical in a PTZ setup. The 28-135mm range also covers a useful spread of focal lengths for most shooting scenarios. We offer it as an optional extra alongside the camera hire.

Can the FR7 match footage from other cameras on my shoot? Yes. The FR7 is part of Sony's Cinema Line and shares the same sensor technology, S-Cinetone picture profile, and S-Log3 colour science as cameras like the FX6, FX9, and FX3. This makes it straightforward to match footage across a multi-camera production. Cine EI mode with MLUT management gives you additional control for consistent grading.

How far in advance should I book? The FR7 is a specialist piece of kit and availability can be limited, so we'd always recommend booking as early as you can — particularly for live events or multi-day shoots. Request a quote with your dates and we'll get back to you with availability and pricing.
