The Zeiss Contax 100mm Makro-Planar was Zeiss’s flagship macro lens for the Contax stills system. Rehoused for cinema in PL mount, it gives you true 1:1 close-ups without dioptres or extension tubes. It’s the lens to reach for on product shots, beauty close-ups, textures, food and any insert where detail sells the shot.

A floating element keeps it sharp across the whole focus range, so it doubles as a portrait-length prime when you’re not shooting close-ups. The roughly 16cm of working distance at 1:1 leaves room to light the subject without the lens casting a shadow. You also get the same organic Contax rendering as the rest of the range, so macro inserts cut cleanly with the 6-way set.

The lens is PL mount. Pair it with the Alexa Mini LF to use the full coverage, or run it on a Sony FX camera with the Vocas E-PL adapter.

How close does the Zeiss Contax 100mm Macro focus? It focuses down to 1:1 life-size reproduction at around 45cm. You don’t need dioptres or extension tubes to get there.

Can I add the 100mm Macro to the Zeiss Contax 6-way set? Yes, it’s from the same Contax range, so the colour and rendering match the Contax prime set. It fills the gap between the 85mm and the 135mm and adds true macro to the kit. Add both to your quote and we’ll send them out together.

How does it compare to the Zeiss ZF Makro-Planar 100mm? The Contax 100mm is the cine option and the ZF is the stills option. The Contax version is rehoused in PL mount with geared rings and a long focus throw for clean pulls. The ZF Makro-Planar is a faster f/2 Canon EF-mount stills lens that reaches 1:2 rather than full 1:1.

Do I need insurance to hire this lens? Yes, every hirer needs their own hired-in equipment insurance policy. Sugarland’s own insurance doesn’t cover customer damage to hired kit.
