The Zeiss Contax primes were Zeiss’s flagship 35mm stills lenses, made between 1975 and 1984. Rehoused by Whitepoint Optics, they work as a matched 6-lens cine set with a look often described as Super Speeds on full frame. They’re the set to reach for when clean modern glass feels too clinical: fashion films, music videos and commercials that want a softer, vintage character.

Each focal length has its own strengths. The 21mm holds straight lines well on full frame, and the 28mm focuses impressively close, which makes it one of the most versatile lenses in the case. Both are sharp wide open. The 35mm, 50mm and 85mm open to a dreamy T1.4, sharpen up from around T2.1 and are crisp from T2.8. These are the earlier AE versions, so flares are livelier, while the new irises keep out-of-focus highlights smooth and round.

The set is PL mount. Pair it with the Alexa Mini LF to use the full coverage, or run it on a Sony FX camera with the Vocas E-PL adapter. The matched fronts make the whole set an easy fit with our Misfit Kick matte box.

Do the Zeiss Contax primes cover full frame? Yes, all 6 lenses cover full frame without vignetting. That means they work on large-format bodies like the Alexa Mini LF as well as Super 35 cameras.

Can I use this set on a Sony camera? Yes, with a PL adapter. The lenses are PL mount, so Sony E-mount bodies like the FX5 and FX9 need an adapter such as the Vocas E-PL, which is hired separately.

How do the Contax primes compare to the Zeiss CP3 set? Choose the Contax set for character and the CP3s for a clean, modern look. The CP3s are current Zeiss cine lenses with consistent contrast and colour across the set. The Contax primes bring vintage flares, softer wide-open rendering and faster T1.4 stops on the 35mm, 50mm and 85mm.
